Freelancer FAQs

How can I become a CoLabourNation Vetted Freelancer?

To be vetted, Canadian freelancers must complete an application, be interviewed, and have their portfolios, websites, and social media channels reviewed.

Vetted Freelancers can be referred to clients. If a client hires a freelancer through CoLabourNation, the freelancer pays a one-time matching fee starting at $100*. After paying the one-time fee, you contract directly with the client and no further fees are due to CoLabourNation.

Why was CoLabourNation started?

Founder Sandra Reimer started CoLabourNation because she saw a problem she could do something about.

It is estimated that 25% of Canadians are already gig workers (a category that includes freelancers) and this is the fastest-growing labour category in the country. Only 50% of solo Canadian business owners (including freelancers) make it past the first year and only 25% survive beyond year 3.

The number of freelance job platforms continues to grow and the largest ones keep getting larger. On these large platforms, freelancers compete with hundreds or thousands of other hungry freelancers for projects. For this privilege, the platform will take 10 to 20% of every dollar earned IF a freelancer successfully wins the project. The platform retains ownership of the customer relationship, making it difficult to build long-term, loyal relationships with clients. Sadly, only about 10% of freelancers who join these platforms get work through them and on some platforms only the top 2% earn a viable living.

The CoLabourNation Freelancer-Client Matching service is a better alternative for freelancers than joining a platform like Upwork or FIVERR.

CoLabourNation Vetted Freelancers pay a one-time matching fee when they are HIRED. Plus they contract directly with clients so they can build loyal relationships! It’s a no-risk, low-cost way to get new clients.
